Pink Tower

The pink tower is ten pink wooden cubes, 1 cm to 10 cm on a side, for children of about 2.5 to 4. Full-size towers cost $54.95 to $148.10 at three US sellers on October 2, 2026. We'd buy one: a homemade set a few millimetres off teaches the eye the wrong thing.

What the pink tower is for

The tower trains one thing, judging size by eye. Montessori's 1912 cubes were in rose-colored enamel, 10 cm down to 1 cm, each 1 cm smaller than the last, built on a small green carpet. Nothing in the material stops a wrong cube going on. The eye alone is the check.

That makes accuracy the whole purchase. Built right, the tower shows a 5 mm ledge on every side, all the way up. Make the 9 cm cube 3 mm too big and the ledges around it become 3.5 mm and 6.5 mm, which a careful eye catches.

  • We'd buy it. Our rule is to buy anything where exact sizes are the lesson, and the tower is the clearest case: with no check but the eye, the sizes have to be right.
  • The $93.15 between the cheapest and dearest tower buys beech and Nienhuis's finish. All three list the same ten sizes.
  • Check a secondhand tower with a ruler before paying: ten cubes, each exactly 1 cm smaller, and no flaking paint.
  • The Montessori Room's tower was sold out and Kid Advance's page would not load for us, so neither is in the table.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Count ten cubes back onto the shelf after each turn. The 1 cm cube is choking-size, and it's the one that disappears.
  • Keep the tower built on the lowest shelf, beside where the rug goes down, so the 10 cm cube is never lifted high.
  • Wipe it with a barely damp cloth. Touch up a chip with non-toxic paint or retire the cube; a cube that looks different gets judged by its color instead of its size.

Questions parents ask about the pink tower

What does the pink tower in Montessori teach?

Judging size by eye in three dimensions: which cube is bigger, and by how much. Later it carries the names large and small, and then largest and smallest. It also trains the hand, since the 10 cm cube takes two hands and the 1 cm cube a pinch.

Is there a cheaper way to get a pink tower?

The cheapest full-size tower we found was $54.95 at Montessori Outlet on October 2, 2026. Mini towers and stacking cups cost less but teach something else, because they don't step by exactly 1 cm.

Why not make the pink tower myself?

You can, if you can cut ten cubes true to about a millimetre and paint them evenly. Most home attempts are further off than that, and with no check but the eye, a few millimetres matter.

Before the pink tower, make sure the work before it is solid. The knobbed cylinders lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
