Pink Series Object Box

A pink series object box holds six to eight small objects with three-sound names like cat and cup, plus a label for each, for children of about 4 to 6. We found no US seller with one in stock on October 2, 2026. Household objects and printed labels make a better box anyway.

What the pink series object box is for

It's the first reading work. The child takes a label, sounds it out slowly, finds the object and lays the label beside it. Every word has three sounds and a short vowel, so a child who can build cat with the moveable alphabet can read it.

The color-coded pink series is a later system; sellers such as The Montessori Room label their object sets with the name. Montessori's 1912 reading lesson had the same idea without the color. She wrote well-known words large on cards of ordinary writing paper and set the object, often a toy, in front of the child, who sounded the word out until it came to him.

The lessons that use the pink series object box

  • Building short phonetic words from a box of cut-out letters, which lets a child write by sound before their hand can hold a pencil for long.

  • Reading short three-letter word labels and matching each to a small object, the first step of the pink, blue and green reading series.

  • We didn't find a US seller with a box in stock. Montessori Services lists a 30-object Phonetic Object Box at $34.00 and marks it no longer available. The "about $15 to $45" near the top of this page is the range we noted on October 1, not a price checked against a US listing.
  • Read the word list before you buy. Montessori Services' box included drum and flag, frog and hand, which have four sounds and belong to the next stage. A pink series box should hold three-sound words only.
  • The one set that gives sizes has objects of 1 to 4 cm. The sets are sold for children 3 and up, and small objects need an adult nearby when a younger child is in the room.

Making the pink series object box at home

What to gather

  • Six to eight small household objects with three-sound names
  • Pink card, or white card with a pink border
  • A printer, or a fine black pen and neat lowercase writing
  • A basket or shallow lidded box, and an envelope for the labels
Cut list
PieceSize and markingHow many
ObjectsOnes the child already names; too big to swallow if a toddler is around6 to 8
LabelsAbout 8 by 3 cm, the word in lowercase about 1.5 cm tall (our suggestion)One per object
  1. 1Walk the house with the word list and collect objects the child already knows by name: a cup, a pen, a toy pig.
  2. 2Say each name slowly. Keep the object only if its name has exactly three sounds, one of them a short vowel.
  3. 3Print or write a label for each in the script of your moveable alphabet, and cut the labels the same size so none stands out.
  4. 4Put the objects in the basket and the labels in the envelope.
  5. 5Swap in new objects once the child reads every label without help, keeping six to eight in the box.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Count the objects back in after each session. Anything a toddler could swallow lives on a high shelf.
  • Replace a label that's torn or scribbled on. The child should read the word, not recognize the tear.

Questions parents ask about the pink series object box

What are the words on the Montessori pink series?

Three-sound words with a short vowel, spelled the way they sound. Examples: cat, pig, hat, cup, bed, pen, bug, log. Words with blends, such as frog or stamp, come later.

What is the Montessori Pink series?

The first stage of a color-coded reading sequence: objects, pictures and word cards for three-sound words, usually marked in pink. The object box is its first work, once the child builds words with the moveable alphabet.

Do I need to buy pink series objects?

No. Objects from your own house work better, because the child already knows their names. Buy only the miniatures you can't find, such as a toy pig.

Before the pink series object box, make sure the work before it is solid. The sandpaper letters lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
