Moveable Alphabet

A moveable alphabet is a box of cut-out lowercase letters, several of each, that a child of 3.5 to 6 uses to build words by sound before handwriting is ready. Sets cost $19.95 to $122.30 at three US sellers on October 2, 2026. Card letters in a tackle box make a working set.

What the moveable alphabet is for

The alphabet separates spelling from handwriting. A child who hears the three sounds in cat can lay out c, a, t long before the hand can write them. Montessori's 1912 letters had the same shape and size as her sandpaper letters, cut from cardboard and left loose so the child could move them.

She kept them in shallow boxes, four copies to a compartment, with a black letter glued in the bottom of each, so putting letters away was its own matching work. Her 1914 Handbook describes two sets: large letters for the first words, and a smaller box once the child knows every letter.

Parts of the moveable alphabet
PartWhat it looks like
BoxShallow, one compartment per letter, the letter marked in the bottom of each
LettersSame script as your sandpaper letters; Alison's small set runs 1⅛ to 2 inches tall
CountsFive of each consonant and ten of each vowel in Alison's set; Montessori kept four of each
ColorsVowels in one color and consonants in another. Sets disagree on which; Montessori Outlet's small set is all blue

The lessons that use the moveable alphabet

  • Building short phonetic words from a box of cut-out letters, which lets a child write by sound before their hand can hold a pencil for long.

  • Learning letter pairs that make one sound, such as sh or ee, then reading words built from them, the step after the blue series.

  • Match the script and, if you can, the colors of your sandpaper letters. The child should meet one alphabet, not two.
  • Count the vowels before you buy. Short words use them fast, which is why Alison's set doubles them, and a set with too few stops a child mid-word.
  • The Montessori Room's large wooden alphabet was sold out when we checked, so it isn't listed.

Making the moveable alphabet at home

What to gather

  • Card stock in two colors, one for vowels and one for consonants
  • A lowercase alphabet printed in the same script and size as your sandpaper letters
  • Sharp scissors or a craft knife
  • A tackle box or craft organizer with at least 26 compartments
  • Laminating sheets or clear tape, if the set has to last
Cut list
PieceSize and markingHow many
ConsonantsCut round each letter, consonant color4 of each, 84 in all
VowelsCut round each letter, vowel color8 of each, 40 in all
Compartment labelsOne small letter for the bottom of each compartment26
  1. 1Print the consonant sheets on one color of card and the vowel sheets on the other.
  2. 2Laminate or tape the sheets before cutting if the set has to outlast a few months.
  3. 3Cut close round each letter, so a b reads as a b and not as a rectangle.
  4. 4Glue one small letter in the bottom of each compartment, as Montessori did, so the child can see where each letter goes back.
  5. 5Count the set into the box and write the count inside the lid.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Put letters back one at a time, matched to the letter in the bottom of the compartment, rather than tipped in. The matching is part of the work.
  • Keep the box out of reach of a child under 3. Small cut-out letters are choking-size.

Questions parents ask about the moveable alphabet

What is the moveable alphabet in Montessori?

A box of loose letters a child uses to build words by sound. They say a word slowly, hear each sound, and lay out the matching letters left to right. Montessori's 1914 Handbook says it is after this work that a child writes whole words.

What is the purpose of the Montessori moveable alphabet?

To let a child put sounds into written words before the hand can form letters. Spelling and handwriting are learned separately, so a slow hand doesn't hold back a child who hears every sound.

Large or small alphabet first?

Large. Montessori's Handbook gives the large letters for first words, and the small box once the child knows every letter.

Before the moveable alphabet, make sure the work before it is solid. The sandpaper letters lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
