What the three-part cards (land and water forms) is for

The child lays out the pictures, reads each label and places it under its picture, then checks against the control cards. One set covers one subject, so the cards teach exact names in a field, here geography.

Three-part cards are the later tradition. The 1912 book reads labels and lays them under toys; the 1917 book gives older children a portfolio of figures with their names to copy.

Making the three-part cards (land and water forms) at home

What to gather

  • Card stock, letter size
  • A printer, or pictures cut from magazines and a marker
  • A paper cutter or scissors
  • Laminating sheets or clear contact paper
  • An envelope or small box per set
Cut list
PieceSize and markingHow many
Control cardsPicture with the name underneath, about 9 by 11 cmOne per form
Picture cardsThe same picture without the nameOne per form
LabelsThe name alone, the width of the pictureOne per form
  1. 1Print each picture with its name underneath, twice.
  2. 2Keep one copy whole: that's the control card.
  3. 3Cut the second copy across, just above the name, into a picture card and a label.
  4. 4Laminate or cover all three, and round the corners.
  5. 5Store each set in its own envelope with a picture on the front.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Keep each set in its own envelope or box; mixed sets turn into a sorting job nobody asked for.
  • Wipe laminated cards with a damp cloth. Replace any card that peels, since a damaged card stands out and gets picked by its damage.

Questions parents ask about the three-part cards (land and water forms)

What are Montessori cards?

Usually three-part cards: a picture, a label and a control card for each word in a set on one subject. The child matches label to picture and checks against the control.

Where can I download free Montessori three-part cards?

This site's land and water forms lesson has a free PDF of three-part cards for the first four pairs, with no email asked. The build above shows how to make more.

Printed or laminated cards?

Printed cards are cheapest and fine for a start. Laminate the ones the child uses every week; they'll be handled hundreds of times.

Before the three-part cards (land and water forms), make sure the work before it is solid. The pink series lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
