Sandpaper Letters

Sandpaper letters are lowercase letters cut from fine sandpaper and mounted on smooth boards, vowels on one color and consonants on another, that a child of 2.5 to 5 traces while saying each sound. Sets cost $31.95 to $113.10 at three US sellers on October 2, 2026. Card and fine sandpaper make a good set at home.

What the sandpaper letters are for

Montessori made her first set by hand, cutting letters out of sandpaper and gluing them to smooth cards. The child traces each letter with a finger in the direction it is written while hearing its sound, so the hand learns the shape before it holds a pencil.

Her 1912 cards put vowels in light sandpaper on dark cards and consonants in black sandpaper on white, each card cut to suit its letter. Sets sold today turn that contrast into color: Montessori Outlet, Nienhuis and The Montessori Room all list vowels on blue boards and consonants on pink.

  • Choose print or cursive first, and buy the moveable alphabet in the same script. A child who traces one shape and builds words with another has two alphabets to learn.
  • Grit matters more than wood. Fine grit lets a fingertip feel the edge; coarse grit scrapes after twenty letters in a row.
  • The $31.95 and $113.10 sets carry the same letters on the same colors. The difference is the board material and the finish.

Making the sandpaper letters at home

What to gather

  • Fine sandpaper, 150 grit or finer, in one color
  • Thick card or 3 mm hardboard in two colors, blue for vowels and pink or red for consonants
  • A lowercase alphabet printed in the script you've chosen
  • Spray adhesive or PVA glue and a craft knife
  • A box that holds the boards upright

Small boardsAbout 16 by 12 cm, for a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z14

  1. 1Print the alphabet so the short letters stand about 5 cm tall. Bigger is easier for a finger to follow (our suggestion).
  2. 2Cut each letter out of the printout, flip it over and trace round it on the back of the sandpaper, so it comes out the right way round.
  3. 3Cut the sandpaper letters with a craft knife on a board. Smooth curves matter more than speed; a finger finds every wobble.
  4. 4Glue each letter where it would sit on a writing line, a little right of center, so the child's other hand can steady the board.
  5. 5Press the boards flat under books overnight, then run a finger over every edge and re-glue anything that lifts.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Store the boards upright, face to back, so one letter's grit doesn't wear the next board's face.
  • Wash and dry hands before tracing. Montessori had children wash with soap before touch work, and greasy fingers clog the grit.

Questions parents ask about the sandpaper letters

What age are sandpaper letters for?

From about 2.5 to 5 on this site's sequence, after plenty of spoken sound games. Montessori recorded children who began to write at three and a half, and found four-year-olds keen to trace the letters.

How do I make sandpaper letters for Montessori teaching?

Trace a printed lowercase alphabet, back to front, onto fine sandpaper, cut the letters out and glue them to card boards in two colors, one for vowels and one for consonants. The build above gives sizes and steps.

What is the purpose of sandpaper letters in Montessori?

To join a letter's sound to its shape and to the movement of writing it. The child hears the sound, traces the letter the way it is written, and says the sound back.

The Language lessons page shows where the sandpaper letters sits in the order.
