Plant Care Set

A plant care set is a child-sized watering can, a mister, a soft cloth for the leaves and a tray, for children of about 2.5 to 5.5 looking after a houseplant. On October 5, 2026 small watering cans cost $6.35 and $14.50 at two US sellers. Everything else comes from the kitchen.

What the plant care set is for

The child checks the soil, waters the plant, wipes its leaves and takes off dead ones. A small can holds only as much as a small plant needs, and a fine rose spreads the water gently.

Montessori's Children's Houses had flower-pots and garden plots, and the children watered them with their own little watering-pots.

  • A small watering can is the one piece worth buying. Nienhuis's $6.35 toddler can suits a 2-year-old; Montessori Services' 24 oz can at $14.50 suits an older child.
  • Nobody we checked sold a complete plant care kit in the US. The Montessori Room's plant care page no longer loaded; its flower arranging set is a different work.
  • A spray bottle, half a sponge and a tray are in most kitchens already.
  • Choose the plant before the tools. A sturdy, non-toxic plant the child can reach matters more than any can.

Making the plant care set at home

  1. 1Check the child can carry the can or jug half full without sloshing.
  2. 2Put the can, spray bottle, sponge and basin on the tray.
  3. 3Keep the tray on a low shelf near the plant and the sink.
  4. 4Mark a line on the can halfway up if the plant keeps getting too much.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Empty the can after use so it doesn't grow algae.
  • Rinse and dry the sponge or cloth.

Questions parents ask about the plant care set

What size watering can for a toddler?

Small and light even when full: around 14 cm long for a 2-year-old, like Nienhuis's toddler can. A 24 oz can suits a child of 4 or 5.

What else does a child need to care for plants?

A soft cloth for wiping leaves, a spray bottle, a tray under the pot and a sturdy plant. Most of it is already in the house.

Which plants suit young children?

Sturdy, non-toxic plants with leaves a child can wipe, such as a calathea, a spider plant or a parlor palm. Check any plant against a poison-control list.

Before the plant care set, make sure the work before it is solid. The wet pouring between two pitchers lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
