Mystery Bag (Stereognostic Bag)
A mystery bag is a cloth bag of objects a child of about 3 to 5.5 names by touch before looking. On October 5, 2026 bags with wooden solids cost $16.95 to $65.00 at the US sellers we checked. A pillowcase and six things from the kitchen drawer do the same job.

What the mystery bag (stereognostic bag) is for
The child reaches in, feels one object, names it, and pulls it out to check. Familiar objects come first; later a bag of pairs asks the child to find a twin by touch. The bought sets usually hold small wooden geometric shapes in pairs.
Montessori's 1912 book describes the same work with a blindfold: Froebel's bricks and cubes sorted by touch, and later coins and grains. The bag is the albums' way of hiding the eyes.

- Montessori Outlet's two bags with wooden solids, at $16.95 on sale, cost less than a third of Alison's single bag of pairs.
- The objects matter more than the bag. Familiar household things come first, and the bought solids suit the later pairing game.
- Check that every wooden piece is too big to swallow if a toddler shares the room.
- Montessori Services listed a mystery bag and blindfold set, but its page didn't load when we checked, so it isn't in the table.
Making the mystery bag (stereognostic bag) at home
What to gather
- Thick, opaque cotton, about 30 by 60 cm
- A cord about 70 cm long
- Five or six familiar objects, each too big to swallow
| Piece | Size and marking | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Bag | 30 by 60 cm, folded to 30 by 30 cm | 1 |
| Drawstring | 70 cm cord | 1 |
- 1Fold the cloth in half, right sides together, and sew up both sides.
- 2Fold the top edge over 2 cm and sew a channel, leaving a gap for the cord.
- 3Thread the cord through and knot the ends together.
- 4Turn the bag right side out and fill it.
Keeping a full set on the shelf
- Wash the bag now and then; it's handled a lot.
- Count the objects back in after each turn, so nothing small ends up on the floor.
Questions parents ask about the mystery bag (stereognostic bag)
What is a stereognostic bag?
Another name for the mystery bag: a cloth bag of objects the child names by touch alone. Stereognostic means recognizing a solid form by handling it.
Do I need to buy a mystery bag?
No. A pillowcase and objects from the house cover the first lessons. A bought set of wooden pairs helps later, for matching by touch.
What goes in a Montessori mystery bag?
Five or six familiar objects with very different shapes, such as a spoon and a toothbrush. Later, pairs of small wooden solids.
Before the mystery bag (stereognostic bag), make sure the work before it is solid. The touch boards (rough and smooth boards) lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
