World Puzzle Map

The world puzzle map is a wooden board with one knobbed piece for each continent, set in a frame that holds every piece in its place, for children of 3 to 5.5. Maps cost $39.95 to $150.00 at three US sellers on October 2, 2026. A printed map on foam board, with a bead glued on each piece, makes a home version.

What the world puzzle map is for

The map lays the globe flat and turns the continents into things a child can lift. Each piece has a knob, and the frame takes it back only in its own place, so a wrong piece shows at once.

Puzzle maps aren't in Montessori's 1912 to 1917 books; Nienhuis, Alison's and Montessori Outlet all sell them today. They work like her wooden geometric insets, which she did describe: pieces handled by a small knob, fitted into a frame that supplies the control.

  • Check the knobs first. A knob that works loose is choking-size, and Montessori Outlet sells replacement knobs, which tells you they do come off.
  • Match the map's colors to your continent globe if you have one. A child who learns Africa as green on the globe shouldn't meet it in another color on the map.
  • The $39.95 and $150.00 maps are both laser-cut wood. The dearer two add a USA-made board (Alison's) or the hemisphere circle (Nienhuis).
  • The Montessori Room's world map was sold out when we checked, and Kid Advance's page would not load for us.

Making the world puzzle map at home

What to gather

  • Two copies of a printed world map, continents colored to match your globe
  • Two sheets of 5 mm foam board the size of the map
  • Spray adhesive, a craft knife with fresh blades and a cutting mat
  • Seven or eight wooden beads about 1 cm across, and strong glue
Cut list
PieceSize and markingHow many
Base boardFoam board with one map copy glued on, the size of the map1
Top boardFoam board with the second copy; the continents are cut out of it1
Knobs1 cm wooden beads, one per continent piece7 or 8
  1. 1Glue one copy of the map to the base board. It shows the child where each continent goes back.
  2. 2Glue the second copy to the top board and let both dry flat.
  3. 3Cut each continent out of the top board with a fresh blade, holding the knife upright so the edges come out square. Small islands can stay part of the frame.
  4. 4Glue the top board, now a frame with continent-shaped holes, square onto the base board.
  5. 5Glue a bead to the middle of each continent piece, leave it overnight, and write the piece count on the back.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Check every knob before the map comes out. Re-glue a loose one at once, or take that piece away until it's fixed.
  • Store the map flat with the pieces in. A frame stored on its edge drops pieces.
  • Carry it to the table yourself for a child under 3; the frame is big for small arms.

Questions parents ask about the world puzzle map

How many continents are on a Montessori puzzle map?

Usually seven, one piece each: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America. Some maps join Europe and Asia or leave out Antarctica, so count your pieces and teach the names that match them.

What colors are the continents on a Montessori map?

Most sets follow the continent globe: Africa green, Europe red, Asia yellow, North America orange, South America pink, Australia brown, Antarctica white. Check yours against your own globe.

Can a 3-year-old use a puzzle map?

Yes, with one or two pieces out at a time at first. The lesson on this site starts at 3, after the sandpaper globe.

Before the world puzzle map, make sure the work before it is solid. The sandpaper globe lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
