Sandpaper Globe
The sandpaper globe is a small globe with rough sandpaper land and smooth blue water that a child of 2.5 to 4.5 learns by touch. Ready-made globes cost $42.30 and $81.85 at the two US sellers we could read on October 2, 2026. A plain globe painted blue, with fine sand glued on the land, makes one at home.
The first lesson with it is Sandpaper Globe: Land and Water. Not sure your child is ready for it? Two minutes of questions place your child on the sequence.

What the sandpaper globe is for
The globe teaches two words through the fingers: land and water. No continent has a name yet. The child feels where the rough stops and the smooth begins, and hears which is which.
It isn't in Montessori's 1912 to 1917 books. Alison's Montessori and Nienhuis sell it as a globe of land and water, and Nienhuis sets its stand at 23 degrees, like the earth's axis. It builds on a material Montessori did describe: a small board with a rough half and a smooth half, for training touch.
| Part | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Land | Sand or sandpaper in tan or beige, rough to the fingers |
| Water | Painted blue and smooth |
| Size | About 16.5 cm across on The Montessori Room's globe |
| Stand | Wooden; Nienhuis angles it at 23 degrees |

- Feel the land before you buy if you can. The sand should be fine and even; a coarse patch is the one a child keeps rubbing.
- The globe is usually sold beside the colored continent globe that comes next. Buy the pair from one maker if you can, so the shapes match.
- Montessori Outlet and Montessori Services had no sandpaper globe, and Kid Advance's page would not load for us.
Making the sandpaper globe at home
What to gather
- A small plain globe on a stand, 15 to 20 cm across
- Blue acrylic paint and a small brush
- Fine sand or fine sandpaper, and white craft glue
- A clear matte spray sealer
| Piece | Size and marking | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Globe | 15 to 20 cm across | 1 |
| Water | Every ocean and sea, two thin coats of blue | All water |
| Land | Fine sand glued inside each coastline | All land |
- 1Paint the oceans and seas blue in two thin coats and let them dry.
- 2Brush glue over one continent at a time, staying inside the coastline.
- 3Sprinkle fine sand over the wet glue, press it lightly and tip off the extra.
- 4Leave it overnight, then seal the sand with clear matte spray so it doesn't shed.
- 5Run your fingers over it with your eyes closed. Rough and smooth should be plain at every coast.
Keeping a full set on the shelf
- Wipe the water with a dry cloth and keep water off the sand.
- Wash hands before and after the lesson. Homemade globes shed a little sand, and a child who mouths fingers will taste it.
Questions parents ask about the sandpaper globe
What is a sandpaper globe?
A globe with rough land and smooth water, made to be touched rather than read. It is usually the first geography material, from about 2.5.
Sandpaper globe or a regular globe first?
Sandpaper first. A printed globe carries too much at once; this one carries only land and water, and the child finds them by touch. The colored continent globe comes next.
How big should a sandpaper globe be?
Small enough for a child to steady with one hand while the other traces. The Montessori Room's is about 16.5 cm across.
The Cultural lessons page shows where the sandpaper globe sits in the order.
