Puzzle Word Cards

Puzzle word cards carry the common words a child of about 4.5 to 7 must read by sight because they don't sound out: the, was, said, you. The one set we could price on October 5, 2026 was Nienhuis's 122 cards at $25.50. Index cards and a marker make a good set in ten minutes.

The first lesson with it is Puzzle Words (Sight Words). Not sure your child is ready for it? Two minutes of questions place your child on the sequence.

What the puzzle word cards are for

Each card holds one word. The child learns three at a time by sight, then reads them in phrases with phonetic words: the cat, I hop, to the bed. A different card color for puzzle words tells the child not to sound them out.

English spelling is the reason for them. The 1912 English edition of Montessori's book already noted that English, unlike Italian, needs some words learned whole.

The lessons that use the puzzle word cards

  • Learning by sight the common English words that can't be sounded out, a few at a time, so the child can read whole phrases.

  • Only one US seller had a puzzle word set we could price. Montessori Services listed one, but its page didn't load when we checked.
  • Homemade cards work as well as bought ones. A word list from the child's own picture books is the best guide to which words to make.
  • Match the print to the moveable alphabet the child already knows.
  • Alison's Montessori had no puzzle word set, and The Montessori Room only phonetic three-letter word cards, when we looked.

Making the puzzle word cards at home

What to gather

  • Index cards, white or one color kept just for puzzle words
  • A fine black marker
  • A small box or envelope

Word cardsIndex cards cut to about 10 by 4 cm20 to start
  1. 1Write one word per card in clear lowercase print, the same style as your moveable alphabet.
  2. 2Start with the, I, to, was, said, you, are, he, she, my, of, do, have, come, one.
  3. 3Keep them in sets of three, held with a clip, so new words come in small groups.

Keeping a full set on the shelf

  • Keep the cards flat in a box. A bent card gets left out of the game.
  • Replace any card that gets written on or torn.

Questions parents ask about the puzzle word cards

What are Montessori puzzle words?

Common words that can't be sounded out from their letter sounds, learned by sight on cards: the, said, was, you.

How many puzzle words are there?

There's no fixed list. Nienhuis's set has 122 cards. Twenty or so of the most common words cover most early reading.

Should I buy puzzle word cards or make them?

Making them is easy and lets you match the print to your other materials. A bought set saves time and comes with a longer list.

Before the puzzle word cards, make sure the work before it is solid. The pink series lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
