Child's Food Preparation Tools
A child's first food preparation tools are a crinkle cutter or a blunt nylon knife and a small cutting board, for children of about 2.5 to 5. On October 5, 2026 single tools cost $5.50 to $9.95 and a peeling kit $32.00 at the US sellers we checked. A butter knife and a kitchen board cost nothing extra.
The first lesson with it is Banana Slicing (First Food Preparation). Not sure your child is ready for it? Two minutes of questions place your child on the sequence.

What the child's food preparation tools are for
The child peels a banana, lays it on the board, and slices it with a crinkle cutter pressed down with both hands, or a blunt knife with the holding hand curled out of the way. The slices are served, and the board is wiped.
Montessori's 1912 book wanted children of four or five taught to peel fruit, and her 1914 handbook includes knives in every table setting. Child-sized tools like the crinkle cutter are modern.

Questions parents ask about the child's food preparation tools
What is a crinkle cutter?
A wavy blade with a handle along the top. The child presses it straight down with both hands, which keeps fingers away from the blade.
What knife can a 3-year-old use?
A crinkle cutter, a butter knife with a rounded tip, or a nylon knife with a serrated edge, always with an adult beside them.
Do I need special tools for Montessori food preparation?
No. Start with a butter knife and a small board from the kitchen.
Before the child's food preparation tools, make sure the work before it is solid. The hand washing lesson lists the signs that a child is ready to move on.
