Folding Cloths
Folding cloths are small squares of fabric stitched with a line for each fold, for children of about 2.5 to 5. The one US set we found on October 5, 2026 cost $18.00 at Alison's Montessori, four cloths in a wooden box. Squares cut from an old pillowcase with a sewn line work as well.
The first lesson with it is Folding Cloths. Not sure your child is ready for it? Two minutes of questions place your child on the sequence.

What the folding cloths are for
The child lays a cloth flat, lifts two corners, and matches them to the other two along the stitched line. One fold in half comes first, then quarters, then a triangle. Real napkins and laundry follow.
The stitched cloth is a later album material. Montessori's handbook has children folding their own aprons and putting the table linen away.

- Only one US seller had folding cloths when we looked. Montessori Services' folding activity is no longer sold, and Montessori Outlet and Nienhuis's US store had none.
- This is one of the easiest materials to make. A bought set saves sewing time and gives neat, even lines.
- Firm cotton that lies flat is easier for small hands than a soft, slippery napkin.
- The Montessori Room's six cloths, at $21.99 CAD, add more fold patterns. With a basket they cost $39.99 CAD.
Making the folding cloths at home
What to gather
- Plain cotton, such as an old pillowcase
- Contrasting thread, or a fabric marker
- Scissors and a ruler
| Piece | Size and marking | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Cloths | 27 cm squares, hemmed to about 25 cm | 4 |
- 1Cut the squares and hem the edges, or use pinking shears to stop fraying.
- 2Sew or draw one straight line across the middle of the first cloth.
- 3On the second, add a second line crossing the first, for quarters.
- 4On the third, sew one line from corner to corner.
- 5On the fourth, two diagonal lines crossing in the middle.
Keeping a full set on the shelf
- Wash and iron the cloths flat now and then. Creased cloths are hard to fold neatly.
- Keep them folded in their basket, so the child starts from a finished fold.
Questions parents ask about the folding cloths
What are Montessori folding cloths?
Small squares of fabric with a stitched line showing where to fold. Children match the corners along the line and smooth the fold.
How many folding cloths do I need?
Three or four. Start with one line in half, then a cross for quarters, then the diagonals.
Can I use washcloths instead?
Yes. Draw a line on each with a fabric marker, or skip the lines once the child folds neatly.
The Practical Life lessons page shows where the folding cloths sits in the order.
