What the flag stands (flags of the world) is for
The child takes a flag from the stand, names the country, and places the flag on that country on the map. The home country's flag comes first, then countries the family knows, then a continent at a time.
Flags appear in Montessori's 1900 lectures only as the national flag in front of a model school. The flag stands come from the later albums.

Making the flag stands (flags of the world) at home
What to gather
- Printed flags about 3 by 2 cm, from a public-domain source
- Toothpicks with the points cut off
- Glue, and a lump of air-dry clay or a block of foam
| Piece | Size and marking | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Flags | About 3 by 2 cm, printed on both sides or folded over the toothpick | 10 to start |
- 1Print your own country's flag and a few others from your continent.
- 2Cut them out, fold each over a toothpick, and glue it shut.
- 3Push the toothpicks into clay or foam to stand them up.
- 4Keep each continent's flags together in a small box.
Keeping a full set on the shelf
- Keep each continent's flags with their stand. Mixed-up flags slow the work.
- Straighten bent poles before a flag gets stuck in its hole.
